Liam Hassan-Beserekumo (Studio 4-103) presents a selection of work from the past five years in our latest exhibition at Thames-Side Studios Lounge.

Liam’s work comes from a place of exploration and sensitivity, developing his techniques over time. The processes Liam uses have developed as a means of addressing his fine motor skill challenges and using alternative methods of applying paint and mixed medium.

Beginning with relaxed pencil drawings produced by ‘free thinking’, Liam says his sketching gives him an opportunity to relax, something he refers to as ‘thought therapy’. Liam uses this line work to apply layers of mixed mediums and colours, with the sketch as his guide. The choices of medium changes according to what he intuitively feels may create an interesting pattern, texture, depth or colour.

He does not plan to be abstract or non-figurative. Liam’s style of painting is unconstrained. The exact images are not immediately apparent but gradually emerge. Liam enjoys experimenting with different mediums. PVA glue is often mixed with acrylic paint to create layers of colour, and he enjoys mixing different colours, applying them simultaneously to create unique marbling effects.

Liam has key areas of interest that he returns to as a foundation / inspiration in his work. These include the fire service, Liverpool FC, Liverpool and London architecture, disability rights, Africa, Black Arts movement and his own ancestry.

Liam hopes that his artwork and unique journey as an artist can be an inspiration to others.
