Ship to Shore is an exhibition of new paintings by Michael Bartel (Studio 5-113).

The paintings in this show are a development from drawings made along the Thames path. The tugs and barges on the river, with their clean lines and colourful, weatherworn patina, have always interested and inspired me.

The work in the show were all made in 2024-25 and whilst the shapes and forms are true to the original drawings, the colours were selected intuitively, with an emphasis on bright and crisp, and with more than a passing suggestion of playfulness.

About the artist:
Michael Bartel (b. 1960 Plumstead) grew up in East Greenwich. Living close to the river the barges, boats, wharves, boat yards and muddy foreshore soon became his adventure playground. Throughout his life's employment, including that of a printer, delivery driver, motorcycle courier, carer and latterly since 2007 as gardener, Michael maintained his practice as a painter.

He studied Foundation at Goldsmiths College, followed by BA Hons Humanities Art/ European Thought and Literature at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology. Michael has exhibited in group shows at Lewisham Arthouse and APT Gallery, and in 2025 at Thames-Side Studios Open Studios and exhibition.

Ship to Shore is Michael Bartel's first solo exhibition.
